News from the Adair County School District

School employees in Adair County are feeling the pressure as they prepare to administer the Kentucky Core Content Test. Most students also say they are feeling the pressure to do well.

Phyllis Curry, Supervisor of Instruction and the school district's Assessment Coordinator says the district is embarking on something serious.

"It is vital that we do well," said Curry. "The reading and math portions of the state test form the basis for the federal No Child Left Behind Act. All of our schools will have to show improvement on this year's test as the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) targets have increased for all schools."

The state test measures whether a student is progressing and learning on grade level. It also is used to determine the overall academic health of individual schools and the district. Teachers are taking steps to improve scores and students have been refreshing in their classes ever since they returned from spring break.

"The pressure is on, but we have the ability to perform well," said Superintendent Darrell Treece.

The KCCT exam is being given at every school throughout the state to students in grades 3-11. In Adair County the testing schedule is as follows:
  • May 2, 2011 through May 13, 2011: KCCT (formerly CATS) for Third-Grade 8

  • May 9, 2011 through May 20, 2011: KCCT for Grades 10 and 11

  • May 16, 2011 through May 20, 2011: Iowa Test of Basic Skills (Norm Referenced) for Grades 3 through 7
