Adair Schools receive Readiness/Emergency Management grant

Implementation is already underway

By Brenda Mann, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services
Adair County School District, 1204 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY

The Adair County School District has partnered with the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative in securing a Readiness and Emergency Management Schools (REMS) grant through the United States Department of Education to fund staff training and update district and school emergency management plans.

Our school district will work closely with local first responders and other community partners to develop an "all-hazards" approach to emergency management. Through this process district and individual school plans will be revised and tailored to fit each school's specific needs. GRREC's REMS grant coordinator Rondal Hammer is working with the district to assure the plan aligns with new state and national standards.

"This is the third emergency management grant that GRREC has coordinated in the past five years," Hammer said. "We know that a safe environment is more conducive to student learning so we are committed to helping our school districts provide their students, faculty and staff with a safe and secure environment."

District and school REMS teams have already begun implementation. Training for team members is helping guide the process of updating the emergency management plans. Implementation of the grant is a coordinated effort of District team leader Brenda Mann, principals, assistant principals, counselors, school resource officer, school staff and school safety coordinators Terry Harvey-Adair High, Carl Shirley-Adair Alternative, Sherry Stotts-Adair Middle, Kim Goodin-John Adair, Kim Barnett-Colonel William Casey and Alissa Barnes-Adair Elementary.

The REMS funding is providing Adair County School District staff trainings to better prepare to address incidents that may arise and have an effect on our students, parents, faculty and staff. The Green River Regional Educational Cooperative, which is one of eight educational cooperatives in the Commonwealth, serves 33 districts in south central Kentucky and Western Kentucky University. GRREC provides professional development services to educators with a focus on quality teaching to foster student learning. The Cooperative operates dozens of state and national initiatives impacting more than 120,000 students, teachers and administrators.

We are extremely pleased to be a recipient of this grant and to work in partnership with GRREC and other area schools to enhance school safety in our District. -Brenda Mann
