The Kentucky Circuit Court Clerk's Trust for Life organization has reached their goal of one million names to the Organ Donor Registry. That figure is now nearly 1.1 million.

In 2006, the Kentucky Circuit Court Clerk's Trust for Life was one of the organizations that encouraged the Kentucky Legislature to pass HB57, setting up the new Kentucky Organ Donor Registry. It was named to a coalition which includes the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) and other organizations, to create the state-wide, confidential registry of people who wish to help others through organ and tissue donation. The Kentucky Organ Donor Registry was formed in 2007.

The Kentucky Circuit Court Clerks are vital to the registry mission, asking each person obtaining a driving license or state I.D. if they would like to add their name to the registry. The circuit clerks add over 98% of the names to the registry. Enormous efforts of countless volunteers state-wide by means of health fairs, organ donation awareness events in schools, and various public educational events about organ donation have helped Kentucky reach its four-year goal of adding one million names to the Organ Donor Registry by year end 2010. That figure is now nearly 1.1 million. Reaching this milestone will give hope to the hundreds of patients and their families in need of organ transplants.

There are over 110,000 men, women and children in the U.S. on the transplant waiting list, nearly 700 of whom are Kentuckians. While transplantation is one of the greatest successes of modern medicine, the need for organs is so much greater than the number available. "The people of Kentucky have shown they want to save lives" explains Roger Schott, Laurel County Circuit Court Clerk and Board president of the Kentucky Circuit Clerk's Trust for Life. "This is a huge victory, but it is just the beginning. Now, we begin adding two million names," explains Schott.Organ donation is truly a Gift of Life. If you would like to add your name to the Registry or would like more information about organ donation go to www.donatelifeky.org or call 800-525-3456.
