Great Wooded South Lexicon: A modest proposal from Jim

by Jim

In the spirit of cultural diversity and assimilation, perhaps the folks who are now "of here" could share some of the colloquialisms, idioms, and expressions used in the duchies where they resided before settling in the land of milk and honey, the the Auld Sod of Adair, which, according to no less an authority than Joe K. Sparks, out-vasts Texas.

I would go so far as to suggest that the Adair Assimilation Academy give serious consideration to adding a course just for natives called "A Primer on the Understanding of Foreign Tongues." Just think how handy this would be when, for example, a new arrival in the promised land stops by a country store and wants to order a local favorite. The shop keeper could then repeat back the order in Adair argot ("Yes, Ma'am -- one 'loney san'wich, fixed up reg'lar"), thereby saving the customer embarrassment while at the same time gently giving him or her a valuable lesson in speaking Adairese.

Meanwhile, three entries for your consideration as additions to the GWSL:
Torge (rhymes with "forge") -- in the direction of. Last time I saw Alec, he was headed torge home.

Ignert -- unlearned. Lord help, that boy is as ignert as half a rock.

Reach -- [you] hand me. Reach me that roll of tape.
