Has never seen as noisy a town as Columbia

Comments re article 43554. Racket not keeping her awake but is annoyingDonna Saunders writes:
With regard to the speeding car noise - I wish I had a nickel for every one of those cars on a daily basis here on Burkesville Street. I would be beyond rich!!! I have never seen as noisy a town as it is here in Columbia. Most of the time along with the noise comes the speeding too. We've lived here 7 years now and it still amazes us!!!! - Donna Saunders
Note: I wish I could disagree with you. I can't. You are absolutely right. Unnecessary and intolerable noise levels have been a chronic but easily preventable problem in this city since I was a kid many decades ago. Quite possibly, it is the biggest single economic development problem we have. New laws aren't necessary to stop most of it. Speeding is evident and the police have radar. The same car can harrass and threaten downtown for hours, often during peak dining hours, during church services, and, yes, even during funerals. Kentucky statutes make it illegal to modify muffler systems. This is a no brainer. And in many instances the loud noises accompany and encourage illegal activity, which simply means that the first step to taking back our town from drug dealers is to enforce existing noise and speed laws. That is simply not being done. If the problems with speeding and loud noise on Burkesville Street to the bypass were addressed, it would have a ripple effect on the other streets. That's were our focus ought to start. -Ed Waggener
