Martha Evaree (Chicken) Stephens Bernard, Russell Co., KY (1927-2011)


Funeral services for Martha Evaree Stephens Bernard, will be Tuesday, at 10amCT, March 29, at Bernard Church of God, 170 Stephens Ridge RD, Russell Springs, KY, with Brother James Small, Brother John Mark Dunbar, Brother Billy Dunbar, and brother Jamie Bryant officiating. Pallbearers: Her grandchildren and their spouses. Burial in the Lucinda Cemetery. Bernard Funeral Home, 367 Main ST, Russell Springs, KY, in charge of arrangements.

Martha Evaree "Chicken" Stephens Bernard, 84, of Bernard Ridge in Russell Springs, KY, joined her husband of nearly six decades in his heavenly home on what would have been his 94th birthday.

Mrs. Bernard was born on March 6, 1927, in the Caney Fork Creek area of Russell County, a daughter of the late Henderson Stephens and Evaline McQueary Stephens. She married the late Johnie Green Bernard on August 15, 1947, and she died Saturday, March 26, 2011, at the Russell County Hospital.



Mrs. Bernard, known as "Memi B" to her grandchildren, was a member of Bernard Church of God, which she attended her entire life. She served as song leader, Choir leader, was a Sunday school teacher and served, along with her husband, as the church clerk for many years.

She read the entire Bible through 13 times and was named Mother of the Year by Bernard Church of God in 1980. She was a member of the Russell County Hospital Auxiliary, the Russell County Homemakers, the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, the Lucinda Cemetery Board of Trustees, and the Russell County Ladies Republican Club. When her children were in school, Mrs. Bernard was an active volunteer with 4-H and a member of the Parent Teacher Association. A storyteller, avid reader, long-time election officer and farm wife Mrs. Bernard loved gardening, sewing,animals and nature.She is survived by the following:
  • Three daughters and sons in law: Rosalie and Arvis Louy, Jamestown, KY; Tony and Donna Hopkins, Mount Vernon, KY; and Junior and Connie Foster of Russell Springs, KY

  • A son and daughter in law: Ronnie "Butch" and Sandi Bernard of Russell Springs, KY and a son of her heart and his wife, Johnny and Maudena Beatty of Russell Springs, KY

  • Four granddaughters and their spouses: Bethney Foster of Cleveland, TN; Bretta and Randy Dillon of Russell Springs, KY; Bridget and Stephen Clark, Dunnville; and Maria and Jamie Bryant, Columbia, KY

  • Four grandsons and their spouses, Jeron and Jennifer Loy of Jamestown, KY; Ken and Serenity Hopkins of Mount Vernon, KY; Stephen and Evan Hopkins of Atlanta, GA; and Benjamin Foster of Somerset, KY

  • Nine great grandchildren: Jayln Loy, Shelby Bryant, Enrique Clark, Clay Dillon, Faith Bryant, and Abagail, Charlotte, Andrew, and Bradley Hopkins

  • A brother and sister in law: Arvester and Rosie Stephens of Russell Springs, KY

  • A sister: Clara Cunningham of Ohio

  • And several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Bernard was preceded in death by four sisters, Bessie Stephens, Ada Dixon, Cora Aaron, and Delphia Coffey; and three brothers, Luther, James C. and Arthur Ray Stephens.

Funeral services are Tuesday, at 10amCT, March 29, at Bernard Church of God, 170 Stephens Ridge RD, Russell Springs, KY, with Brother James Small, Brother John Mark Dunbar, Brother Billy Dunbar, and brother Jamie Bryant officiating. Pallbearers: Her grandchildren and their spouses. Burial in the Lucinda Cemetery.
