Quick action of Columbia, KY FD prevents serious problems

Laundry cart fire at Adair County Regional Jail handled with no facility damage, and more importantly, no injuries and no breach of security.

From Rick Wilson
Thanks to the Columbia Fire Department for the prompt response to the jail this morning when our staff recognized an odd burning smell. The smoke quickly consumed the area in the laundry and firefighters were able to locate a laundry cart in flames and move it outside where it was extinguished.

The facility received no damage and most importantly there were no injuries and no breach of security.

Our staff followed the policy for fire in the facility and the smoke evac system helped to contain the smoke to the zone where the fire was. I was very thankful for the great outcome, the efficiency of our fine fire department, and the outstanding employees at the jail. I greatly appreciate the quick action of Pam Yarberry, John Powell, and Carolyn Burton. A special thanks to Kay Butler, Alan Burton, Kathryn Burton and Dennis Selby who came to help in case evacuation was necessary.

This incident makes me very aware of the importance of conducting fire training and drills in order to be ready when something like this happens.

We are required to conduct fire training sessions at least quarterly. Since January, we have already conducted two fire training programs.

Thank you,
- Rick Wilson, Adair County Jailer
