As the community recoups from a hard winter, it is a welcome sight to see the trees starting to bud out. With the warm spring days of late, it is easy to say the trees have literally started to bud and flower overnight.

Seems Redbud Winter is upon us, as we all know it will be followed by Dogwood, Blackberry, Stump and then Linen Britches. As I traversed the hills and hollers between Breeding and Center, I spied the peach tree blooming in a fence row near the road.

One can only surmise it was planted by accident years ago one hot summer day, as a passerby pitched their peach pit out the window as they sped by.

Little did they know that it would not only take root but flourish.- I honestly do not know if it will produce fruit, but a watchful eye will tell the story's end later this summer.

Sycamore Springs: Peach tree winter

2011-03-25 - Anthony Perkins RD, Metcalfe Co., KY - Photo by Cynthia Meyer.
Spied Tree "I spied this peach tree on the way to Center today," Cindy Meyer writes, adding, "I could not resist the photo op. I wish now I had taken a picture of the whole tree, but it was in a fence row, full of weeds and such that it would not have done the tree justice." The tree, a volunteer plant, she thinks, has an interesting, albeit surmisable, origin, as told in the accompanying story.
