Kacy C. Wilson, Columbia, KY, will be a Unite For Sight Global Impact Fellow in Accra, Ghana, from May 20, 2011 to May 30, 2011.

She is the daughter of RIck and Sandra Wilson of Columbia, KY, a graduate of Adair County High School, and a pre-medical student at Western Kentucky University, where she earned President's List or Dean's List academic honors in each of her semesters at the Bowling Green, KY, school.

As a Unite For Sight Global Impact Fellow, Kacy C. Wilson will volunteer with the local ophthalmic staff to provide eye screenings in remote, rural villages in the Accra, Ghana, region.

Before going abroad, Ms. Wilson will complete Unite For Sight Global Impact Training, which includes a Global Health Online Course, Community Eye Health Online Course, Cultural Competency Online Course, Volunteer Ethics and Professionalism Online Course, and an Eye Health Online Course.

One of the responsibilities of all Global Impact Fellows is to fundraise a minimum of $1600, and 100% of the funds provide eye care to patients living in extreme poverty.

As a fellow in the program she will assist the staff of the partner eye clinic in all aspects of the eye care programs.

Volunteers take patient history, test visual acuity, distribute medication and eyeglasses prescribed by the eye doctors, provide eye health education in the villages and schools, and help with the coordination of patient surgeries that are provided by local ophthalmologists.

Volunteers also have an opportunity to observe the surgeries provided at the eye clinic.

With the assistance of volunteers like Kacy, Unite For Sight restored sight to more than 31,000 patients to date and provided eye care to 1,000,000 patients, according to the organization's founder, Jennifer Staple, who is president and CEO of Unite for Sight.
