The old library: It was old and drafty, but it had character

A Legacy of Service begun in the old library on Burkesville Street is carried on today in the Adair County Public Library located on Greensburg Street

By LaVerne Jessee writes:
I've enjoyed reading the comments about the old library on Burkesville Street. I began my career there in 1963 with the Kentucky Department for Libraries, Lake Cumberland Regional Office, which was housed there. The building was an old, drafty brick structure, very cold in the winter; but had so much character, with squeaky old wooden floors and a swing on the front porch.

At that time Mrs. Mary Cravens was the County Librarian, and also the Bookmobile Librarian, with her husband driving the bookmobile for her. Besides myself, working in the Regional Library were Bob Allender, Mrs. V.P. Henry, and Randy Flowers. Thus, in this old house, a legacy of great library service for the citizens of Adair County was formed, and continues on today in the Adair County Public Library located on Greensburg Street. -LaVerne Jessee
