Carolyn Plahuta: The fifties went by too fast! Comments re article 43028 Remembers going to library on Burkesville Street Carolyn Plahuta writes: I, too, went to the library on Burkesville Street in an old house. and I remember the White Cash being next door. I can vaguely remember when Kroger was on the Square , where the Ben Franklin was, and when Casey Jones Jewelry was on the end of the corner, and Coomer's restaurant in a cubbyhole on the Square, had the best hamburgers. How good the popcorn was from the popcorn machine at the entrance to the Rialto theatre. The fifties went by tooo fast... -Carolyn PlahutaThanks for the great memories. Many a Lindsey Wilson College student made it through school eating dinner for 55 cents at Coomer's Cafe, and your statement about the great hamburgers, raises the question: Does anybody know if Bea Coomer Beard plans to re-open a restaurant again? There is a big movement on which wants her back in a restaurant like the one she and her mother and sister ran, the one the late Haskin Coomer used to do all the heavy cooking for before the womenfolk came in (this is so; Pete Walker wrote it in the paper; Haskin told him) to greet and feed hungry masses. What a great Adair County institution the cafe was! Up there with The Hotel Dining Room, Epp's Place, the G & M Grill, Circle R, Donnie's/Jim Dandy, Dillon House, and Meadow Hill Inn, Hatfields, Bob's Better Burgers, and Mrs. Furkins' Little Store. Makes you wonder? When we all get to that great Adair County in the sky, where will we want to eat our first meal in heaven? All these places will be there, won't they? As "Jim" is my witness, this question is a sincere one, not meant to steer anything up at all. I'd just like the answers so my phone would quit ringing off the hook - with people agg'avating me, demanding answers.-EW This story was posted on 2011-03-15 09:28:12
