Click on headline for full story plus photo(s) By Alan Reed News from Adair County School District The top priority need facing the Adair County School District is a new elementary school to replace Col. Wm. Casey Elementary School, according to, Ken Ross, of Sherman-Carter-Barnhart Architects, at the Long Range Facilities Planning Committee Forum last night, March 7, 2011, at the Adair County Board of Education conference room. The total estimated construction need in Adair County Schools, including the new elementary school, is nearly $41 million. The projects, Ross pointed out, just show what is needed, not necessarily what's going to be done. The facilities plan also lists the need for major renovations at John Adair Intermediate School, the Raymond Lacey Music Building, a new auditorium at Adair County High School, a new bus garage, and major renovations to the central office. The urgent priority is the new elementary school. According to Ross, some of the projects on the plan are long-range plans and many won't be accomplished for several years. Members of the local Facilities Planning Committee for Adair County Schools will submit a draft plan to the Kentucky Department of Education. Following review from the Kentucky Department of Education, the committee will meet again to vote on a final version of the plan. The final meeting of the committee will be March 28, 2011. The plan will then be submitted to the local board of education for approval. Public hearings will be scheduled to explain the proposed plan and to request additional input. Terry Partin chaired tonight's meeting at the district's central office which was attended by representatives including the board, principals, teachers, site-based council members and community. Partin explained to the group that the school district is required by law to reconvene a local planning committee to evaluate all buildings, review priorities and revise a facilities plan every four years. While it may be a sort of wish list, it becomes an important list based on the greatest facilities needs in the school district. The school system hires architects and an engineer to evaluate your buildings. Their information, and input from school and community helps the system prioritize its capital construction needs. This information allows a district to anticipate and plan bond funding for new buildings and construction. According to Darrell Treece, Superintendent, The state will look at what were doing and make suggestions. At that time well hold meetings and make all the numbers public. Partin commended the committee saying, Im impressed with all the expertise we have in this room. Its encouraging to hear all these concerns presented. This story was posted on 2011-03-08 01:57:02
