LWC Races the Roads of Columbia/Adair Co. this weekend Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference races will offer look at some of America's top collegiate cyclists. Races are Saturday and Sunday. Events at Purdy and Kelleyville, on Saturday; at Adair County High School in Columbia on Sunday. By Chris Wells News from Lindsey Wilson Cycling The roads of Columbia/Adair County will be scattered with bikes this weekend as the Lindsey Wilson College cycling team hosts the Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference season opening road race on Saturday and Sunday starting at 8amCT each morning. The 25-mile loop takes place on numerous county roads in Columbia with starting points on Little Cake RD, beside Purdy Church, 8004 Liberty RD (MAP), Columbia, KY, . and Kelleyville Church, 77 Kellyville RD (MAP), Columbia, KY. There will also be a one kilometer four-corner criterium race on Sunday at Adair Co. High School, 526 Indian DR, Columbia, KY. MAP) Blue Raider head coach David Grigsby is eager to see how his riders compete in the first race of the season. "The course we have routed out is extremely hilly, it is equally as difficult as the national's course, it's really steep and it'll be tough coming out of winter training," Grigsby said. "We stage races at two different churches and both places welcome us with open arms," Grigsby said. "They treat us like family every year, allowing us access to their facilities." Races will take place rain or shine starting at 8amCT on Saturday, February 26, 2011, with the first rider category taking off from the Kellyville starting point for 20 kilometers. At Noon, six different categories of road racers will take off from the Purdy Church starting point for races of various distances. The men's A group will ride the longest with three laps on the 25-mile course, while the men's C and D and women's B, C and intermediate groups will complete one lap of 25 miles. The men's B and women's A riders will complete two laps of the loop. Each starting time for the road-race groups is set five minutes apart, starting at Noon and finishing with the last group at 12:25pmCT. "Any spectators who want to come out will have the best view at the Little Cake hill," Grigsby said. "It is the premier hill on the course and takes place right before the finish line." Sunday's criterium races are set to start at 9amCT at Adair Co. High School, 526 Indian DR, Columbia, KY. Racers in this event will complete as many laps as possible for as little as 30 minutes or as long as 60 minutes, depending on skill level, with two laps added at the end to decide the winner. Start times for the six criterium races range from 9amCT to 1:15pmCT; however times may change due to inclement weather or other unforeseeable events. This story was posted on 2011-02-21 14:17:16
