Poetry by Robert Stone: A sonnet for Valentine's Day

How many hows
-a sonnet for Valentine's Day on requited love
I did not choose to love you at first sight
but chose to live these barren four long years
with unrequited wishes taking flight
and winging aimless through my hopes and fears.

I am still caught within my own spun web
but now escape to play from time to time
with fearful force before the coming ebb
and joyful noise before the vesper chime.

I probably will be forever stuck
but hope to die contented at my last
with each memento of unlucky luck
and every unremembered sadness past.

I do not know how many hows may be
but still believe that one may set me free.
