News from Rep. Ed Whitfield's office

Washington, DC. - U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield (KY-01) announced today that the Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded a $237,500 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

"Often, first responders and public safety services bear the brunt of tight budgets during tough economic times. But it is essential we do all that we can to aid local fire departments which protect our communities," Whitfield said." I am pleased the Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded these funds to help keep the citizens of Adair County safe."

The purpose of the grant is to enhance the ability of fire departments and emergency management service (EMS) organizations that are not affiliated with hospitals to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as first-responder personnel.

Grants are awarded through a competitive process overseen by fire service experts. Applications are reviewed on how the funds will fulfill the top priorities of the AFG program which are operations and safety, and vehicle acquisition.
