One driver killed in three vehicle collision in Barren Co., KY

Shortly before 1pmCT,. Monday January 10, 2011, a three vehicle collision called Barren County Sheriff's deputies and other emergency personnel to Burkesville Road near the intersection of Old Sherfey Road.



The preliminary investigation reveals the accident occurred when 43-year-old-Jeffrey T. Ashley of Marrowbone, KY, was westbound in a 2001 Chevy Cavalier and crossed the center line striking a 1999 Freightliner with an attached trailer hauling logs, driven by Clinton E. Birdwell, 33 of Red Boiling Springs, TN. Ashley's car then continued out of control striking an eastbound 2004 Dodge Durango driven by 35- year-old Randall A. Honeycutt of Albany, which was following the tractor-trailer.

Ashley was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Tim Gibson. Honeycutt and four of his passengers 33 -year-old Shana L. Honeycutt, 8-year-old Mattie L. Honeycutt and two-week-old twins were all transported by Barren-Metcalfe Emergency Medical Services to T.J. Samson Hospital for treatment of injuries, where they were later released. Birdwell refused medical transport.

The deceased was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Deputy Kevin Wilson leads the investigation with the assistance of Detective Rusty Anderson and Deputy Rodney Sponhouse.

The Summer Shade Volunteer Fire Department, Deputy Coroner J.D. Walden and Barren-Metcalfe EMS also responded.

According to Barren County Sheriff's Office Public Relations Director, Trevor Phillips, this is the first fatal accident their department has investigated in 2011. The department worked two fatal wrecks during this same time period in 2010.
