Pear Chronicles reminder of growing up in Sulphur Well, KY 'It was a favorite of everyone at harvest time but I also loved it when the blossoms and their scent called to me in spring and even in winter when it was easier to see that every limb reached right up to the heavens as if to receive special blessings.' - - Linda Pear Tree Chronicles, Album: 2010 in life of century old tree By Linda Waggener Sometimes it takes someone "from off" to remind locals how lucky they are. Thanks, Sharon Whitehurst, for sharing your pear tree story and photos! Having lived here for over forty years and regularly reminded that I, too, am from off ( if only by my first husband, Ed), I share your delight in the wonders of Adair County and your treasured pear tree. The tree and I both have roots in Metcalfe County and I remember how I loved a similar tree that stood just outside my Grandmother Marcum's kitchen in Sulphur Well. It was a favorite of everyone at harvest time but I also loved it when the blossoms and their scent called to me in spring and even in winter when it was easier to see that every limb reached right up to the heavens as if to receive special blessings. I'm sorry to say that I don't have information to offer about growing fruit trees but if it's out there, the readers and contributors of ColumbiaMagazine.com will find it. Happy New Year! -Linda This story was posted on 2011-01-01 13:39:27
