Workshop for members, non-profits Boards Jan. 12, 2011 News from the Center for Rural Development If you are thinking about serving or are currently serving on a nonprofit board, learn more about your legal and professional responsibilities as a board member at a Nonprofit Governance Workshop presented 10:30am-12pm noon ET/9:30-11:00amCT, on January 12, 2011, in by The Center for Rural Development, 2292 South U.S. 27, Somerset, KY. The workshop is free. Attorney Robert Rich, who focuses on nonprofit governance and counsel in his Cincinnati, Ohio, practice, will provide legal and practical facts that you should know if you choose to help improve your community and expand your professional connections by serving on a nonprofit board of directors. The workshop will include information on such topics as: state law duties and responsibilities of a nonprofit trustee and board member; federal and IRS guidelines, reporting requirements, and new Form 990 standards for a tax-exempt organization; the role of a public trustee and mission faithfulness; prudent personal standards for investment and administration; reasonable compensation and avoiding public censure and criticism; protections from legal liability and bad publicity; and board orientation, training, and engagement as protection from liability. "As part of our Leadership Focus Area, The Center is offering expert training to new and prospective nonprofit board members interested in serving their home communities and the entire region," Lonnie Lawson, president and CEO of The Center, said. "Our workshop will help people learn their legal and professional responsibilities as a board member."
