Poetry by Robert Stone: What others say

What others say
- a sonnet for myself and for others who say I talk too much
If I should tell no other, why tell me
the secrets hidden in the past you claim?
Confession is relief but not bell free
and small reminders brighten ashen blame.

If I should only hear and not respond,
speak not of achings in your broken heart.
Display is cry for help of healing wand
and great despair diminishes restart.

If I should understand a need for hope,
let hesitation quickly flee away.
Construct a new and solid plan to cope
and simple steps will lead to better day.

Be still, my mouth, and let me listen well
and when you speak, be careful what you tell.
