Small Dog Rescue and Retirement welcomes new home owners for their pets, and they welcome sponsor gifts at Christmas time and all year round.

Ann Larson started rescuing small animals when she was 16. She went on to become a truck driver and was one of the first 10 women to drive 18-wheelers solo, trans-continental.

But her heart stayed with the animal rescue and to this day she devotes all her time to saving and giving longer lives to abused and abandoned dogs.

She has 24 dogs inside at this point, although her husband, Larry Mehaffey, teases her that sometimes it feels like 2,000 dogs. Larry worked for the State Highway Department in Adair County after the Cumberland Parkway toll booths closed and now he, too, is full time caregiver for the little dogs.

They have several dogs now that need homes and would make good companions. All are spayed and/or neutered and for a reasonable donation a dog can be adopted any time.

Ann and Larry offer a "Seniors for Seniors" program, a match-program which helps when someone has died or had to go into a nursing home leaving a small dog behind and in need of a new home.

Ann makes every effort to match the pet with someone who is like the one who had to give the pet up, same gender, same mannerisms, and for a small donation the pet can go right into the matched home.

Small Dog Rescue and Retirement has several two-year-old Chihuahuas which need homes now. They also welcome donations from anyone who would like to help but is unable to take an animal in.

Sponsors of Small Dog Rescue can be listed on the website as sponsors who have helped with the work of saving abandoned or abused dogs. The rescue operation also welcome any gifts of help with their internet site from anyone would like to contribute in that way.

Ann and Larry can be reached by e-mail at: alarson@scrtc.com for more information. They are located at 78 Romines Road, Edmonton, KY 42129, in the Bridgeport section of Metcalfe County.
