Wherein writer suggests new CM contest, and whereafter, the long version of the First Five Principles of Photography, from Pete Walker to Celia Downey to one inspired by Andrew Zimmern

Comments re photo 38221: Easy to be in the Christmas spirit today

M.E. Lewis writes:
You could make this picture into a Christmas card, Ed.

Maybe we could have a contest of pictures which look like a Christmas Card.

I had some beautiful birds in my yard this morning that would have looked great on a card. -Maury
Thanks, M.E. Your Photography Critique is Right on. Your suggestion for a Contest will be put before The Board.

On the other hand, you need a good scolding if you didn't take the bird pictures. Remember, the Fifth Principle of Photography, named for Andrew Zimmern as Andrew's Principle, If it looks good, shoot it.

And of course keep the others in mind:

The Fourth is the Celia Downey Principle:The Greatest Pictures are not Taken When You Don't Have Your Camera.

These all follow the 30 second First Three Principles taught to all Journalism School Photography graduates when they were handed a Polaroid Swinger and an eight pack of film by the late Pete Walker, one of the truly great natural photographers. He made every new editor, whether they held a Masters Degree, were clever hippies, were ministers or foxhunters, or were smart enough to drive the company trucks, the Waggener-Walker Newspapers Photography 101 One Minute Photography PHD:
  1. Be Outside
  2. Be Up Close
  3. Keep your ass to the sun
Those who learned these principles and practiced got back with 7-8 printable pictures from the single pack issued to them by the company. -ED
