A Kindred Spirit: Why Nanas Should Take Care of Themselves

Teresa Bell Kindred

I've said it before and I'll say it again, we women are often so busy taking care of others that we neglect our own health and I am no different.

For months I have had every intention of making an appointment for my annual exam with my gynecologist. I would think about it, intend to call and then forget. I finally remembered and yesterday was "the day."

The morning didn't start off well. When we woke up yesterday the entire house was cold. The fire in the stove had gone out (due to son forgetting to put wood in). Bill was running late and didn't have time to work on it. The boys went to school. That left me and I missed the "how to start a fire" lesson when I was a Girl Scout (or is it Boy Scouts who do that?)

I bundled up and went to my doctor appointment. The first snow of the year began to fall. It didn't stick but it was pretty to drive through, and reinforced how cold it was outside. I arrived at my least favorite check up of the year and when I went inside I quickly realized it was cold in there too.

"The heat isn't working properly," the nurse said.

As if I couldn't tell.

I looked at the paper gown she had instructed me to put on. Looked out the window at the snow and wondered if I would be a Popsicle before I got out of there. It seemed extremely unfair to me that at this stage of my life when hot flashes are so intense that they wake me up in the middle of the night that I couldn't manage to have one when it would actually come in handy.

All kidding aside, yearly exams are important. If you haven't had yours make that appointment today and remind your loved ones to do the same. Someone needs you to take care of yourself!

Oh, and call ahead and make sure their heat is working. If it isn't- take a space heater with you. It might just keep you from freezing! Teresa Kindred Nanahood.com
