Born and raised in Abbott, Arkansas

I have ridden a Honda GoldWing across that bridge twice...a motorcycle trip in 1985 and again in 1988. There is an incline railway from the tourist center down into the bottom of the canyon. The track is so steep that each of the "train cars" is actually a set of stairs. When you sit down, your feet are just about even with the shoulders of the people sitting in front of you.

As for crossing the bridge, all is fine while you are moving...the motorcycle's suspension absorbs the bridge deck's movement. But when I stopped and put a foot down, it nearly scared me to death! I could feel every foot step of the people walking on the bridge.

Lastly, concerning pronunciation...DID YOU KNOW?
ITS ILLEGAL TO MISPRONOUNCE THE NAME OF THE STATE OF ARKANSAS. THATS RIGHT FOLKS, STATE LAW STATES IT MUST BE PRONOUNCEDAR-KIN-SAW (ARKANSAS STATE CODE: 1-4-105).
Any slip of the tongue, whether intentional or by accident, in referring to the people of Arkansas or its fine river in a way that gives reference to the state immediately to the north of Oklahoma...ie) Kansas...is punishable by law.

Now don't say you haven't been warned! -Rickie Williams

Thanks. We've gotten word that the Canon is pronounced "Canyon," as in Steve Canyon. Your letter raises a question: What's the penalty for mispronunciation of Arkansas? Is one sentenced to listen to radio on hold or given a stay-away in Florida? Pretty severe, whatever, we'd imagine. -EW
