Frances Smith on her 90th birthday

By Margaret Smith Harden
Proud to be her daughter

On November 26, 2010 my mom will be turning 90 years old. This fine lady is Frances Smith. She and Dad (Richard Smith) raised 12 girls and 1 boy.

We were raised like most everyone else at thtiat me-poor in resources, but rich in love and character.

I want to pay a special tribute to my mother on her birthday for I think she is the best mother in the world. I can hardly imagine how hard she and Dad had it raising all of us.

We never went hungry and God supplied all of our needs. Mom is not able to stay at home anymore due to a fall she suffered in January of 2009. She has her own private room at Summit Manor Nursing Home and Rehab.

She loves the residents and staff there. She refers to that being her home now. When any of the children pick her up and take her out for awhile she always tells us "it is time for me to go home."

They have lots of activities for their residents at her new home and she loves to go to the gospel singing and preaching. The rest of the time she likes being alone in her little room waiting for someone to stop by and talk a while.

I am teased a lot at the Nursing Home because I have her spoiled. She waits every day for me or one of the other children to bring her something to eat.

Oh, yes now it seems she likes her favorite foods, and I always say why not, because she sure never got any spoiling raising all of us children. I feel she should never want for anything. I try to make sure of that too.

Dad died in 1992 and she has been very lonely since that time. She and Dad were married for 53 years before he passed away. Most everyone in Columbia knows our family and what Mom and Dad taught us.

Dad was a big person on making your word your bond. They would always tell us our name got to a place before we did.

I often think of my parents and how hard they must have had it just to survive. Mom stayed home and worked raising all of us children plus helping on the farm. None of the 13 of us ever went to a babysitter except family members.

I always knew when I got off the school bus mom would be home waiting for me.

We never got into any trouble because we knew if we did and Mom and Dad found out about it, it would be more than trouble for us. When we were told "No" we did not ask again.

I cannot comprehend how hard it must have been on Mom taking care of all of us. Raising 2 boys of my own has been overwhelming itself at times. The laundry, cleaning, and cooking seem so overwhelming to me that she was responsible to do herself.

She never had a washer and dryer to do the laundry with either. She used an old wringer washer or a wash board and hung them on the line to dry. I can remember so many times she would say it's nothing wrong being poor, but to be poor and dirty is terrible.

We were always clean and I am sure you could ask anyone that knew us growing up and they would tell you the same. The cooking for my older sisters was all done on a wood cook stove. By the time I came along they had electricity in the house.

Her life was very hard, but it was good. She and Dad loved each other and all of us kids too. They lived the simple life, but enjoyed all of it.

I wanted to share a few things about my mother and why she is so special to me. A good Christian mother I have been blessed to have.

If I was asked to describe her I could not find the words. There is no way I can imagine my life without her.

To Mom: I love you very much, Mom. All of us love you and are proud to call you our mother.Signed: Margaret Smith HardenBiggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard DR, Columbia, KY
