Joe Hare: Are veterans of other wars forgotten?

Grand Marshals of Christmas Parade should have represented all the wars, U.S. Army Veteran of Vietnam War says

By Joe Hare, Vietnam Veteran
Personal commentary

I read earlier this week where the Chamber of Commerce was naming veterans as the Grand Marshals of the Christmas Parade. This sounded like a great idea, since we have no veterans program here in Adair County, except for the luncheon sponsored by Lindsey Wilson College. This year Lindsey had 175-180 people attend and it was greatly appreciated by the veterans.

While listening to the local news on the radio this morning it was reported that the Marshals for the Christmas Parade would be the Iraqi and Afghanistan veterans and those guys sure deserve the honor. I am the first to say "Welcome Home Brother."

This said. it is my opinion the Chamber has left a lot of this community's veterans out in the cold, just as the Korea and Vietnam Veterans have been treated. There are also several WW II veterans still living and active here in Adair County.

Yes, I am a Vietnam Veteran and this is just one Vet's opinion. But since hearing this, I have had a sickening feeling that I had not had for many years, when I was shunned by people that I thought were my friends upon my return from Vietnam.

This county lost four great young men in Vietnam, many in WW II and I don't know about Korea, so I guess their sacrifice means nothing to the Chamber.

Again I am proud for the honor of our recent, brave Veterans and so glad they are home. - Joe Hare, US Army veteran, 1st Infantry Division- 1967
