Chris Garland, Burkesville, KY, a student currently enrolled in second-year studies in the Somerset Community College Physical Therapist Assistant Program has been elected to a national office of the American Physical Therapy Association's (APTA) Student Assembly Board of Directors.

Garland was selected to participate in the election process at the 2010 APTA National Student Conclave, October 28-31, in Cherry Hill, NJ. and was elected to the position of Student PTA Delegate.

In this role, she will advocate for students, physical therapist assistants and the physical therapy profession at national conferences across the United States in the 2010-2011 academic year. A second SCC student, Brandon English of Lexington, was also on the slate of candidates, but did not win his election for the nominating committee chair position.

The Student Assembly is a component of APTA that focuses on issues related to students. It serves as a voice for physical therapist and physical therapist assistant students from the 485 accredited or developing education programs in the United States. Involvement in the Student Assembly allows students to learn about issues related to physical therapy, become involved in professional activities, and participate in the advancement of the profession.

Garland is the fourth finalist for the position from SCC and the third winner. Jeff Buis of Liberty was elected in 2008 and Jeff Tyree of London was elected in 2009. Garland was the only PTA student elected to a position; all others were doctoral students enrolled in physical therapist programs.

Garland served as the coordinator for the program's efforts in the 2010 Miami-Marquette Challenge, a fundraiser for the Foundation for Physical Therapy. SCC was the winning PTA program nationally in this event and Garland accepted the award on the program's behalf at the APTA National Conference in Boston, Massachusetts this summer. She serves as her class president and has participated in a number of events through the PTA program including the Kentucky Special Olympics State games. She also represented Kentucky at the Federal Advocacy Forum in April 2010, held in Washington.

Also attending the National Student Conclave were SCC PTA Program students Jessica Allen of Somerset; Derek Brown of Lexington; Brittany Cooke of London; Daniel Eubank of Russell Springs; Erin Green of Danville; Erica Kennedy of Lexington; Stephanie Meade of London; Mike Moore of Campbellsville; and Brandon English of Lexington.
