Countdown: 8 Days to Community Thanksgiving

Organizers have raised estimate of Community Thanksgiving attendance to 300
"We want everyone to come, join in, and be together as a community, sharing and being thankful for this great town we live in and being thankful for the many blessings we each have in our own lives. - Sally Kemp

Story information from Jimmy Kemp

With just eight days to go before first Community Thanksgiving, Jimmy Kemp, an organizer, says he wouldn't be surprised if the total number reaches 300 people gathered Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 25, 2010, from 10am-1pmCT at the Columbia Christian Church, 206 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY.

It's a movement, he says. "Everybody just seems to be excited about the whole idea," he said. "They seem to be getting a special satisfaction from helping others and sharing with others."

A day like no other

"We started it in the spirit of service to others," he said. "It has been a lot of work, and there's a lot to do yet, but now, I think, everyone would say that we're all looking forward to a day like no other, ever, in Columbia."

There will be great food. Celebrity servers. There will be folks who might not have had a Thanksgiving dinner were it not for this event. There will be people who might not have had a community family with whom to share the meal. And there will be many to whom going back to basics, the way the first Thanksgiving was observed, sharing food prepared by each other, and giving communal thanks for larger commonweal carries a deeper meaning.

There's still time to participate

There's still time to participate, as a server, as a participant, or with donations of feast stuff or money.

If you want to participate, call, Sally Kemp, at (270) 384-4856, or Fran Neat at (270) 384-2421.

Donations are still welcome. They may be mailed to Charles Grimsley, 102 Public Square, Columbia, KY 42728, or to June Parsons, 706 Pickett ST, Columbia, KY.
