Sweethearts for over 65 years: Arnold and McEva He carried her photo through World War II, separated from it only while being evacuated after being wounded in the Battle of Brest France. He didn't see it again until after returning to Adair County and marrying the girl of his dreams, and later a package arrived from the Army with the personal belongings taken from him the day he was wounded. The rest of the family, forgot the treasure existed until just before his death, when, by chance, the testament to a 67 year romance, resurfaced again. Click on headline for story plus photo(s) by Nancy Mayse Mann There's a picture I treasure. It accompanies this article. Mom gave the picture to Dad when he was getting ready to go to the Army in 1940 or, maybe, when he left in 1944 to fight. It was a black and white picture, but an Army buddy volunteered to colorize it for Dad. Dad carried the picture in his wallet the entire time he was in service . . . until he was wounded in the "Battle of Brest, France." He was taken from the battlefield to a hospital in England. They took everything except his dog tags. He spent weeks in the English hospital learning to walk again, before being transported to the States by hospital ship. He returned home and married the girl in the photo, then McEva Bradshaw. A few months later a package arrived from the Army that had his personal belongings, including the photo. There was also a package McEva had sent to him many months earlier. It contained a carton of cigarettes and a framed photo, but not the same picture. A few years ago, when Dad was in the hospital and Mom was looking through his wallet for his insurance cards, she found, much to her surprise, her picture, a little bent and worn but Dad still carried the photo his sweetheart had given him 67 years ago. Nancy Mann, Arnold and McEva's daughter, November 10, 2010. A Footnote: Arnold Mayse passed away November 5, 2010. He was a veteran of World War II. He has always been my hero and I am so blessed to have such a wonderful father. He will be sorely missed by his entire family. -Nancy Mann This story was posted on 2010-11-11 11:37:14
