Debbie Bradshaw, ACHS win big PRIDE award Adair County High School wins All Star of the Year Award, Debbie Bradshaw wins Environmental Educator of the Year Award. By Cindy Lackey News from Kentucky PRIDE Columbia, KY - PRIDE has honored Adair County High School (ACHS) and Debbie Bradshaw, who teaches at Colonel William E. Casey Elementary School (CWC), for excellence in environmental education. ACHS won PRIDEs All Star of the Year Award for all-around excellence in environmental education. The award recognizes schools that have encouraged participation by many students and developed a variety of programs and facilities for hands-on learning. Bradshaw won the PRIDE Environmental Educator of the Year Award. PRIDE presents the award to three dedicated individuals who are inspiring a new generation of environmental stewards. Bradshaw won the award in the West Division of the 38 counties served by PRIDE. The trophies were presented yesterday during a ceremony at ACHS. ACHS also received $750 for its environmental education program. Adair County can take great pride in the quality of environmental education here, said PRIDEs Mark Davis. CWC and the high school have developed a remarkable outdoor classroom. Students learn so many subjects in a real-world setting, they mentor one another, and they volunteer in their community. In the future, we expect they will be excellent stewards of this areas incredible environment. We thank Ms. Bradshaw and Ms. Sheila Willis at the high school for their leadership. ACHS and CWC began building an outdoor classroom, which is called the Indian PRIDE Arboretum, on their campus in 1999. It features walking paths, an outdoor classroom shelter, a wetland and native plants. ACHS students mentor CWC students through an Earth Day celebration, pumpkin patch event and other environmental education activities, such as bird identification, storytelling and litterbug art. Bradshaw has been active in the PRIDE program for 10 years. She has implemented many activities at her school, including Garden Friends, Environment Packs, recycling, pumpkin patch, Arbor Day celebration and Earth Day celebration. She has been involved in KEA, SBDM and environment grant writing. PRIDE is a nonprofit organization that promotes Personal Responsibility In a Desirable Environment in 38 counties of southern and eastern Kentucky. It was founded in 1997 by Congressman Hal Rogers and James E. Bickford, the states Environmental Protection Secretary. The PRIDE web site is www.kypride.org.
