ACMS A-team members have impressive Quiz Bowl Win

Rebecca Montgomery and Eli Jackson win online competition with 12 other teams from across Eastern United States. Teammates in other competitions have been Timothy Watson, Tiara Holmes, Hannah Burnett, Matt Rogers and Kyle Castaneda

Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

7th grade Adair County Middle School Academic Team members Rebecca Montgomery and Eli Jackson paired up to secure a huge quiz bowl victory on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, against teams from across the country.

These students, along with their other middle school quiz bowl teammates, have been working to improve their prowess at academic competition with online competitions against middle school and freshman academies across the country.

In a hard fought match that came down to the wire, the Montgomery and Jackson duo from the Adair County team squeaked out their first online Quiznet win over 12 other teams: 6 from Georgia, 2 from New York, 1 from Illinois, 1 from Alabama, and 2 other schools from Kentucky.

The victory earned them an invitation to the Quiznet sponsor's national-level tournament in June where other qualified teams from across the country will be invited that won at similar events throughout the fall and spring.

Members from Adair County Middle School's 7th and 8th grade, as well as Adair County High School 9th graders have been participating in the online matches since the end of September.

Although the team has been making vast improvements, this was the team's first victory in simultaneous head-to-head competition with the 12 other league teams. Rebecca and Eli's teammates this season have included 8th grader Timothy Watson, 7th graders Tiara Holmes and Hannah Burnett, and 9th graders Matt Rogers and Kyle Castaneda.

The competition serves as preparation for later tournaments that the team will be invited to participate in. By playing a variety of teams from across the country in this online format, the middle school squad can work on those aspects of academic competition that are needed and make a run for prestigious qualification for the Middle Grades National Academic Quiz Tournament, the first ever such quiz bowl tournament in the nation.

Quiz bowl has been primarily focused on high school students across the country, with last year's ACHS team finishing 7th overall among the 2,450-plus competing high school teams across the nation, the most impressive finish in Kentucky's quiz bowl history.

This year, NAQT is offering the first ever National Quiz Bowl Championship, for which the ACMS team is valiantly striving to qualify.
