Spanning the centuries Ms. Alta, Ms. Esther Gilmer Centenarian and future centenarian's paths may have crossed when Mrs. Barbee was a little girl, living near the the Public Square By Wayfaring Stranger It occurs to this wayfaring stranger that almost certainly, Columbia centenarian Alta Barbee Garnett in her youth knew another Adair Countian who crossed the century mark, Esther Gilmer Dohoney. Both lived near the Square, and Mrs. Dohoney didn't pass away until mid-September 1920, a few days before Miss Barbee's 12th birthday. At the time of her death, Mrs. Dohoney was 102 years old, having been born in Adair County in May, 1818. The point is this: it's quite possible that Mrs. Garnett, still living in 2010, heard Mrs. Dohoney speak first-hand of events witnessed and experienced in the 1820s, nearly two centuries removed from today. -The Wayfaring Stranger This story was posted on 2010-10-22 11:01:53
