Sycamore Springs: You can almost hear that old barn

By Cynthia Meyer
Commentary from Sycamore Springs, KY

One could almost hear the times in its younger year when the barn was in use.

The jingle of the harness as the teams of mules hauled wagons loaded with corn in, out of the weather.

Calves bawling for their mothers when separated for the first time.

Hogs' vocal taunts as they anxiously await for their troughs to be filled with water or feed.

Chickens complaining that the cows are not dropping enough grain as they clean up every grain that was dropped.

Then the miss of the engine as the old tractor pulled wagons loaded with tobacco to be housed, children's laughter as their parents stripped tobacco in the fall for what would be their major source of income for the entire year.

The words of one man's solemn prayer as he found his path to God.

Rain beating on the roof, and weathering the boards; snow blowing in from the North; sleet turning to ice, encapsulating the weeds still left standing from the last fall.

The sun warming the earth as the first flowers of Spring make their debut appearance, sprigs of green grass missed by the hungry cows slowly turning into the weeds of fall...

Yes, if you listen very closely, once could almost hear the lives lived in the times of that old barn. -Cynthia Meyer
