Columbia, KY - Adair County residents are invited to participate in Roadside PRIDE activities planned by Judge-Executive Ann Melton and the Fiscal Court.

On October 21, 22 and 23, 2010, county residents can dispose of trash for free at the transfer station, which is located at 877 L. Willis Road. The drop-off times will be from 7amCT until 3pmCT on October 21, 2010 and 22, and from 7amCT until 11amCT on Saturday, October 23, 2010.

On Saturday, October 23, 2010, volunteers are invited to pick up roadside litter around the county. All volunteers will enjoy a free cook-out, and a prize will be given to the group that brings in the most unusual item found while cleaning roadsides.

In addition, nonprofit organizations can earn up to $250 for picking up roadside litter, thanks to funds received by the county through a state anti-litter program. Nonprofit groups can receive $50 per road mile that they clean (both sides of the road), up to five miles. Examples of eligible groups include churches, Relay for Life teams, fire departments, sports teams, cheerleaders and clubs.

Before October 23, , 2010, please register your volunteer group by contacting Judge Melton's office at (270) 384-4703, deputylisa@live.com or acjudge1@duo-county.com. Please give your group's name, the number of volunteers in your group and the road you plan to clean.

On October 23, 2010, volunteers should check in at 8amCT at the Adair County Annex Back Parking Lot. Doughnuts, coffee and juice will be served.

Volunteers will sign in and pick up their volunteer sheets, trash bags, safety vests and gloves. They can choose the road they want to clean, or they can be assigned a road.

After a welcome by Judge Melton, volunteers will begin working at 8:30amCT.

At 11amCT, volunteers will gather at the Roadside Park for a cook-out. They will turn in their paperwork and vests. Please bring lawn chairs for the cook-out. There will be a play area for kids.

October is Roadside PRIDE Month in 38 counties of southern and eastern Kentucky. Local governments are recruiting volunteers to pick up roadside litter. PRIDE will provide cleanup supplies for volunteers, as well as help local governments with trash disposal costs. For more information, please visit www.kypride.org.
