Paul A. Fryman: Pastor Paul's Ponderings

Pastor Paul's Ponderings, by Pastor Paul A. Fryman, is sent every Monday to members of the congregation of State Street United Methodist Church in Bowling Green, KY. One of those members, Annette Richards, forwarded it to ColumbiaMagazine.com. It's very compelling, maybe even more so for Annette and me because it is so evocative of our Mother's outlook. Pastor Fryman is a former Columbia District of the United Methodist Church District Superintendent, who was a resident of this city for three years. With his permission, the story below is shared with readers of ColumbiaMagazine.com. -EW
"For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he." Proverbs 23:7, KJV

By Pastor Paul A. Fryman
State Street United Methodist Church

She was 92 years young. I put it that way deliberately. You will understand why I put it that way in a moment. She was 92 years young. One summer day, she rose from her bed, fully dressed herself, put on her makeup and brewed one final cup of coffee in her home. It was moving day. She was leaving that day for a new home - a nursing facility. Her husband of 70 years had passed away and she realized the time had come to make that move.

After waiting patiently in the Office, she was escorted toward her tiny new apartment by a caregiver at the facility. She smiled all the way, shuffling along on her walker. As they got on the elevator, her attendant provided a vivid, visual description of her tiny room. "I love it," she said with unbridled enthusiasm. "Mrs. Jones," said the attendant, "you haven't seen the room yet, just wait." "That doesn't have anything to do with it," she said in response. "Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. How the room is arranged has nothing to do with whether or not I will like it...it's how I have arranged my mind. I have already decided to love it!"

She went on sharing with him that, "Each morning when I wake up, I choose to be positive and work with what I have, not dwell on what I have lost. As long as my eyes open, I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away just for this time in my life." With that the elevator opened and Mrs. Jones headed down the hall and into her new, beloved apartment!

The author of Proverbs is right: "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he." How is your attitude? William James once wrote: "The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitude of mind." He's right! There is an old Swedish Proverb that goes: "Those who wish to sing always find a song."

Choose today, yes, even this week, to sing - you will find the song!

Prayer for the Week: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things that I can, and wisdom to know the difference. Amen." - Reinhold NiebuhrQuote for the Week: "When the world says, "Give up," Hope whispers, "Try it one more time." - Unknown
