Adair County 4-H Program Year in Review

2009-2010 was a very busy year for the Adair County 4-H program.

During the past year there were 1500 youth who were enrolled in 30 different clubs.

Youth from ages 6-19 years old were involved in the 4-H program. Many of these clubs were in school club and the Horse Club, Home school Club, Shooting Sports, Livestock, and Clover Buds, just to name a few.



During the year there were several activities for youth to be involved in. Some of the activities were: Talk Meet, Demonstration Contest, Horse Shows, Livestock Projects, County and State Fair exhibits, and the Country Ham Project, just to name a few.

Progressive Farmer Farm and Home Safety week in September

In September a Progressive Farmer Farm and Home Safety Camp was held for the 6th graders in the county. There were over 350 youth who participated in the camp. The youth went to 8 different safety booths to learn about safety on the farm and at home.

During the year, 4-H'ers conducted monthly club meetings and had an educational program during each meeting.

This past year the educational programs dealt with robotics, environmental programs, communications skills, and leadership development.

Horse Club conducted Fun Horse Shows

The Horse Club has conducted Fun Horse Shows in October, in November attended the North American Livestock Show Rodeo and held monthly educational meeting related to horses.

State Shooting Sports Camp in August

The Shooting Sports club has been very active.

In April members attended the State Shooting Sports Camp, held a County Shoot in August, and participated in State Shoot in September. During the year members of the shooting sports club held meetings and practiced related to the program.

S.A.F.A.R.I. after school program conducted this year

Again this year the 4-H program conducted the S.A.F.A.R.I. after school program. Over 300 youth participated in the program and classes were conducted in photography, GPS, robotics, arts, archery, health, just to name a few. There were 100 youth and adults who participated in the Summer 4-H Camp this past year.

Clover Buds build bird houses

Also, this summer an Clover Buds Camp was held and over 25 youth participated in making bird houses and many different craft projects.

At this year's county fair over 40 youth exhibited various projects and participated in several livestock shows. At this year's State Fair 20 youth exhibited their projects.

4-H Leadership program takes Washington trip

In March members of the 4-H Leadership program participated in an educational trip to Washington DC. Member toured the Capital, the Mall, Arlington Cemetery, and the Smithsonian. Members also met with Representative Whitfield..

Tyler Pelston Placed second in state archery

We also had 9 member participate in the State 4-H Shoot. Tyler Pelston placed 2nd in the 9-11 year old age group in the Bow Hunter Archery Division.

The State 4-H Communications contest was held at the University of Kentucky campus on July 10th.

Lily Pearson and Kayla Garrison receive state honors

Adair County had two youth who represented us at the state competition. Lily Pearson was Reserve Grand Champion in the 13 year old Speech category. Kayla Garrison received a blue ribbon in the Junior Health Demonstration category.

4-H Scholarship recipients Sarah Thompson, Anna Powell

This year's 4-H Scholarship recipients were Sarah Thompson and Anna Powell. They both received a $500.00 scholarship to use for their continuing education. Both Sarah and Anna have been very active in the 4-H program.

Last year was a very busy year and I look forward to this year. We have outstanding young people in Adair County and it is my privilege to get to be a small part of their lives and work with them.
