Letter: Not willing to foot bill for preservation We're sure many others feel as Mark Hale does. It is easy to think that doing away with this important part of Columbia's heritage is the cheap thing to do. The cost for preservation will fall largely on private donors. The cost for demolition and redoing the area the old courthouse now occupies will be a minimum of $150,000 which has to be repaid to the Federal government, immediately, plus other incidental cost which could raise the cost to the taxpayers to as much as $200,000. Tear it down and it's like paying child support for the rest of your life without the privilege of ever seeing the child. Keep it, let the private sector foot the bill, and keep a part of our heritage intact for all to enjoy, and for the economic benefits it will keep. -Ed Waggener/ CM About: Believer in signs is scared by what she sees To ColumbiaMagazine.com I don't think anybody can remember Columbia not having a clock tower atop of the court house. It is of historic significance. But as times change so must things of the past. I like our old court house especially the clock tower, but I'm not willing to foot the bill to keep it going. Times are hard for everyone and it doesn't seem like its gonna get much better for some years to come. Our children and grandchildren have already been spent into the next century. Would it be responsible of us to put another burden on them 50 or 75 years from now just to preserve something we like that really has no significance to them. It is a structure that will demand constant upkeep as long as it stands. Do you want to foot the bill? Our county government may have bit off more than it can chew with the new court house. Expenses there are out of sight. The money has to come from somewhere. We either have to cut expenses by eliminating jobs or programs or raise taxes. Nobody wants to do it, including me. It is time, as we must all learn to adjust our pocket book, for us to consider what we leave behind for those who will follow. One day you and I will pass on from this world. Do we really want to leave things we really don't need behind for today's young ones to suffer the burden in their adulthood. I say we take lots of pictures and at the most maybe try to preserve the clock tower somehow. But I think the old building needs to be done away with.
