Jane Lampton DAR announces essay contest

The Jane Lampton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is inviting students in Adair, Russell and Cumberland Counties to participate in two essay contests.


One is open to 9th through 12th grades, with the following topic, "What lessons from Christopher Columbus' life can we draw on today to bring clarity to our decisions in the face of an uncertain future." The length is to be 800-1,200 words. Entries should be entitled, "Lessons from Christopher Columbus."

The other contest is open to 5th through 8th grades, with this topic, "In celebration in 2010 of the 275th anniversary of the birth of Paul Revere, pretend you are paul Revere writing your memoirs. Relate various accomplishments for which you wish to be remembered in the annals of American History." The length is to be 300-1,200 words, depending on grade level. Entries should be entitled, "Memoirs of Paul Revere."

The contest is open to Adair, Cumberland, and Russell County students enrolled in public, private, parochial schools or who are home schooled.

The deadline is December 17, 2010. You may mail entries to P.O. Box 613, Columbia, KY 42728.

Certificates will be issued to all who participate. Winners from various grades will receive a medal from the Jane Lampton Chapter. Winners will go on to state.
