Why of stories on CM needs more attention

About: Wants CM to carry better news of LWC

By Robert Stone

The letter wondering about the "lack of events at LWC" made me start thinking about the stories on ColumbiaMagazine. This very letter illustrates one of the problems. What does LWC stand for? Obvious, you say? Well, obvious if you already know but not if you are a new resident of the area or someone from outside.

Sometimes stories about events give us a lot of details about the people involved but not much about the event itself. A recent story about a book signing did not say whether books would be available for purchase at the signing itself. And there was not even a brief synopsis of the book.

The editor of ColumbiaMagazine is doing a great job of insisting on the Where of its stories. And the writers often are obviously enthusiastic about their subjects but the Why, the motivation, is sometimes missing, sometimes a thoughtless repetition of what is always said. A short statement by one who enjoyed the event or by one who is expecting to attend an event, can keep the reader's interest.

Titles and degrees and lengthy accounts of distinguished participants are OK but they really should be at the end of the article, available to those who want to know specific details not pertinent to the story itself. -Robert Stone
