Letter outlines A-Team Coaches request for Parity

'All coaches are trained at personal expense to remain eligible to coach. All coaches volunteer their time so that students can compete at district, region, and state competitions....The academic coaches of Adair County are asking that our coaching positions be recognized as comparable to any other coaching position, such as basketball, football, cheerleading, golf, etc. All extra curricular coaches are essential to reach the diverse needs of students and we feel none should be excluded from the coaching schedule. -TERESA ABSHER, BETTY KNIFLEY, MARY ANN McQUAIDE, JEANNA PIKE, BRETT RELIFORD, and SHERRY STOTTS

Dear Superintendent Treece and Board Members:

For well over five consecutive years, Adair County's academic teams have experienced tremendous success.

The 2009/2010 academic season was perhaps one of the best since academic teams were started.

John Adair's academic team placed 1st in district and 4th in regional competitions and the Future Problem Solving team went undefeated in district and regional competitions.

Adair County Elementary School placed 2nd in 6th grade Academic Showcase.

Adair County Middle School had several students receiving medals at various competitions and the Future Problem Solving team placed 3rd in the world.

Adair County High School won district, region, and placed runners up at state level competitions.

The Quick Recall team placed 7th in the nation.

Several students at all levels (elementary through high school) received medals from various district, region, and state level competitions. The accomplishments of the academic teams are too many to detail within this letter.

The coaches at all levels have invested a great deal of personal time and commitment to make our teams competitive.

For the last 2 years, Mr. Reliford has volunteered his time and efforts to the middle schools' Future Problem Solving team while Mrs. McQuaide has volunteered for the last 3 years for John Adair Intermediate's academic team.

Mrs. Stotts volunteers yearly for FPS evaluator at competitions for all three schools as well as moderator for elementary Quick Recall competitions.

All coaches are trained at personal expense to remain eligible to coach. All coaches volunteer their time so that students can compete at district, region, and state competitions.

While we are very aware of the economic downturn and stretched educational budgets, we also know that if boards do not plan for requested expenses, many activities will be unfunded.

The academic coaches of Adair County are asking that our coaching positions be recognized as comparable to any other coaching position, such as basketball, football, cheerleading, golf, etc. All extra curricular coaches are essential to reach the diverse needs of students and we feel none should be excluded from the coaching schedule.

The academic coaches of Adair County are requesting:
  1. Academic coaches be placed on the coaching salary schedule--just as other coaches are placed.
  2. The Future Problem Solving coach and Quick Recall coach should be viewed as separate coaching positions due to the considerable time responsibilities of each.
  3. When salary schedules are realigned into the coaching schedule, compensation should reflect current academic coaching years of experience.
Sincerely,

s/Teresa Absher
