9/11: A Day of Service and Remembrance

Proclaimed by Governor Steve Beshear

Frankfort, KY - On the ninth anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Gov. Steve Beshear has proclaimed September 11, 2010 to be a Day of Service and Remembrance in Kentucky.

The day is named in accordance with the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which was signed by President Barack Obama in April 2009 and recognizes September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. The day serves as an opportunity to recapture the spirit of unity and compassion that inspired our nation following the 9/11 tragedy and recommit ourselves to sustained service in our communities.

"I encourage all Kentuckians to recognize and honor the service of the heroes of 9/11 by giving back and providing assistance in their own neighborhoods and communities," said Gov. Beshear. "From our men and women in the armed forces to citizens who volunteer through charities to neighbors who perform good deeds - there are many ways, big and small, we can all serve."

The Day of Service and Remembrance also allows Americans and Kentuckians alike to honor those who lost their lives in the attack nine years ago and pay tribute to those who continue to serve our nation both here and abroad.

For anyone seeking volunteer opportunities in accordance with the Day of Service and Remembrance, please visit the Corporation for National and Community Service's website http://www.serve.gov/.
