Columbia, KY, and surrounding area now more bicycle friendly Relocation of bicycle racks, installation at church, help of Mayor Bell, local businesses are among many signs of changes for better for bikers By Gary Rose and Diane Rose Columbia and the surrounding area have made another step in becoming more bicycle friendly. It has been brought to the attention of BicyclingAdair.org that a bicycle rack has been relocated to be more useful and that there is a new bicycle rack in the area. As you first reported on September 1st, the rack that was located in the parking lot at East Fortune and South Reed Street has been relocated on the Square in Columbia. At the racks former location it was neither a safe or secure place for bicycle parking. Racks that are far from an entrance, hard to find, or perceived to be vulnerable to vandalism will not be used by most cyclists. As noted by Ms Reagin the rack was seldom, if ever used. BicyclingAdair.org applauds the efforts of Ms Reagin and Cafe On The Square (212 Public Square, Columbia, KY) to get the rack moved, and Mayor Bell for permitting both the relocation of the rack and the parking block. A new rack is now located at Asbury United Methodist Church (9600 New Columbia Road, Campbellsville, KY 42718) just inside Taylor County on KY 55. Even though Asbury is located outside of Adair County, it attracts members from Adair and the surrounding counties. This rack is located in the parking lot in plain sight of the front door of the church. BicyclingAdair.org is aware that members of Asbury sometimes bicycle to church and that members of Asbury donated the rack, necessary supplies and the labor to install it. BicyclingAdair.org believes that this may be the first bicycle rack located at a church in the area. The lack of a secure parking space keeps many people from using their bicycles for basic transportation. Leaving a bicycle unattended, even for short periods, can easily result in damage or theft. Finding a bike rack that doesn't work or isn't conveniently located makes for a frustrating experience. The Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP) http://www.apbp.org/ has detailed information on the recommend types and locations for bicycle racks. BicyclingAdair.org is pleased to see the placement of these racks and the progress made in making Columbia and Adair County Bicycle Friendly.
