Lindsey Wilson to remember 9/11 with Day of Service Free Admission for Military Personnel and Veterans to LWC/Southern Virginia football game By Duane Bonifer, Director of Public Relations News from Lindsey Wilson College Columbia, KY - The Lindsey Wilson College community will remember 9/11 on Saturday with a day of service on campus and a moment of silence at the football game. The LWC community will also honor those who have served their country - military personnel and veterans who show their ID will be admitted free to Saturday afternoon's football game at Blue Raider Stadium between LWC and Southern Virginia University. "This is an important day for all Americans to remember," said LWC President William T. Luckey Jr. "By making 9/11 a day of service and remembrance, we can take a tragic event and use it to inspire others to make a positive difference in the world." This year's 9/11 remembrance coincides with LWC's annual Family Weekend, which is September 10-12. "We've created several service opportunities for students and their family members to collaborate on throughout Saturday morning," said Amy Thompson-Wells, director of civic engagement and student leadership and co-director of the LWC Bonner Leader program. "We hope these activities will help spread 'Bonner love' and make a difference in our community." In the morning, the LWC Bonner Leader program will sponsor several events to commemorate the day. At 9:30 a.m. CT in the Norma and Glen Hodge Center for Discipleship, 402 Helen Flatt Drive, the Bonner Leader program will conduct a short program about 9/11. That will be followed by service activities in Columbia-Adair County and on the A.P. White Campus:
In 2002, President George W. Bush declared Sept. 11 "Patriot Day" to honor the victims and heroes of the Sept.11 attacks. In 2008, President Bush amended the proclamation to include volunteering as an appropriate form of remembrance. A year later, Congress passed the Serve America Act, which authorized the president to formally designate 9/11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. President Barack Obama amended the Patriot Day proclamation on Sept.10, 2009, to officially make 9/11 a National Day of Service and Remembrance.
