Columbians nominated for entrepreneurship award

Kaye Bowman, Stacey Wilson, and David Bowman, owners, Community Medical Services Inc., Columbia, KY are competing with two other nominees for the EIEA award for "For profit small business" category

U.S. Congressman Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05) will speak at the 2010 Excellence in Entrepreneurship Awards (EIEA) program and luncheon at 11:30amET/10:30amCT, September 13, 2010, at The Center for Rural Development, 2292 South US 27, Somerset, KY.



Rogers is scheduled to address the group and recognize this year's award winners and finalists nominated in each of the four EIEA award categories at the event, hosted by Eastern Kentucky University's College of Business and Technology, Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation, and The Center.

The 2010 EIEA finalists and their respective categories are: For-Profit Business
  • Tommy and Gwen Mitchell, owners, Rocky Top Log Furniture, Lancaster, KY
  • Shannon Wright and Kendall Wright, owners, Wright Concrete and Construction Inc., Dorton, KY
  • William P. Hardy, director of planning, Carhartt Inc., Irvine, KY
For-Profit Small Business
  • Frances D. Snowden, owner, Ravenna Florist and Greenhouse, Ravenna, KY
  • Timothy Howard and David Howard, co-owners, Howard Engineering and Geology Inc., Harlan, KY
  • Kaye Bowman, Stacey Wilson, and David Bowman, owners, Community Medical Services Inc., Columbia, KY
Start-Up Business
  • Amber Stone, owner, Body of Stone Fitness, London, KY

"Entrepreneurs are visionaries with detailed plans," Rogers said. "Their success in execution strengthens the hinge in our economy by employing our families and widening the local door of opportunity."

Tickets to the event are $20 per person and may be purchased by contacting The Center at 606-677-6000 or via e-mail at enea@centertech.com. Reservations must be made by Aug. 31.

The EIEA program recognizes business owners and entrepreneurs in 55 Kentucky counties for their economic success, community contributions, and operational achievements in a business or non-profit organization.

Warren Nash will be the keynote speaker

Keynote speaker for the event will be Warren Nash, deputy commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Commercialization and Innovation. Dr. Robert Rogow, dean of Eastern Kentucky University's College of Business and Technology, will serve as emcee.

In addition to the award finalists, winners in the EIEA Collegiate Competition and The Center's youth Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute (ELI) Business Concept Competition also will be recognized at the luncheon.

Award winners are determined by the economic success of the enterprise, contributions to the community, and job creation and operational achievement as measured by innovative business practices, superior safety achievement, and superior technology.

The Center, 2292 South US 27, Somerset, KY, is a non-profit organization.

To be eligible for EIEA competition, businesses must be located in one of the following 55 Southern and Eastern Kentucky counties: Adair, Bath, Bell, Boyd, Boyle, Breathitt, Carter, Casey, Clark, Clay, Clinton, Cumberland, Edmonson, Elliott, Estill, Fleming, Floyd, Garrard, Green, Greenup, Harlan, Hart, Jackson, Jessamine, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Laurel, Lawrence, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Lewis, Lincoln, McCreary, Madison, Magoffin, Martin, Menifee, Metcalfe, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike, Powell, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Rowan, Russell, Taylor, Wayne, Whitley, or Wolfe.
