Filing deadline at 4pmCT today for school board seats, independents for county office, and city races. Latest report: Only 1 candidate for school board, one independent for Magistrate in District 3; two-way Mayor's race, crowded field of 8 in races for City Council Seat. Election season is here

By Ed Waggener

Columbia real estate agent Murrell Burton alerted us to a story by Paul Hayes which appears in this mornings Adair Progress about a proposed increase in real estate and property tax by the Adair County school board. The paper with the story, datelined Tuesday, August 10, 2010, is on newsstands now around Adair County. Burton said the proposed increase is 22%.

Burton also said that there may be much intrigue today in the filings for school board. District 1, now represented by Greg Willis, is open. Willis has filed as an independent candidate for Magistrate in District 3, in opposition to incumbent Sammy Baker.

As of 3:45pmCT, yesterday afternoon, Monday, August 10, 2010, no candidate had filed for the open District 1 School board Seat. The filing deadline is 4pmCT, today, August 10, 2010 for local races which were not subject to the primary.

But in District 3, Joseph Payne has filed for the seat now held by Board Chairman Chris Watts, who may not run with Payne in the race. Burton says that he and others in the anti-tax organization will back opposition to Payne and will back an anti-tax candidate in District 1, as well. Late Monday afternoon, Jackie Turner filed for the District 3 seat

As of yesterday only two candidates had filed for Mayor of Columbia: Senior Councillor Charles Grimsley and former Columbia Chief of Police Mark D. Harris.
