100 Years Ago: The trip to Louisville, KY reduced to 4 hours By "Jim" A century ago, the thought of making the trip from Columbia to Louisville at the breakneck speed of 25 miles an hour must have been been heart-stopping. That came to mind while researching the News earlier today for an upcoming column and the following brief entry "hove into view." In but three short sentences, the writer (most likely, long time News man J.E. Murrell), quietly noted - perhaps not without a sigh for the retreating and a measure of trepidation for the advancing - the passing of one era and the advent of another: The old drummer's wagon will soon be a thing of the past. Mr. T.M. Carr, representing the Adrian Fence Company, Louisville, made Columbia last Friday in a two-seated automobile. He worked the town and started on his return trip to Louisville at 2:30 p.m., saying he would make the city in time for supper. It is one hundred miles to the city. (Adair County News, August 3, 1910.)That's just slightly faster than today's Lindsey Wilson College athlete on a bicycle could make it. -CM This story was posted on 2010-08-08 08:31:22
