Poetry by Robert Stone: Determination

Determination
- a villanelle by Robert Stone, inspired by Eoghan Camron
I won't feel sorry for myself I say,
resolving never more a wasted night.
Determination is my strength today.

What failed to be, what may not come, betray
the satisfactions in my present sight.
I won't feel sorry for myself I say.

I will no longer dawdle and delay
but steel my mind and soul for faithful fight.
Determination is my strength today.

Old comforts fail and new seem far away
and yet unyielding to my former fright,
I won't feel sorry for myself I say.

I will escape the valleys where I stray
and strive to gain at last a hopeful height.
Determination is my strength today.

The selfish aims I hide, the good display
and seek to live within a loving light.
I won't feel sorry for myself I say:
Determination is my strength today.

- Robert Stone, 18 July 2010
