Hospital Auxiliary News: June 21, 2010 meeting Auxiliary members remember, have silent prayer, share remembrances of Mary Evelyn Walker By Sue C. Stivers Membership & Public Relations Chairman The Westlake Regional Hospital Auxiliary met Monday, June 21 at 6:30 PM at the Hospital Cafe, 901 Westlake Drive in Columbia for their monthly meeting. President Margaret Sparks called the meeting to order by welcoming the members and guests. The minutes were read by Secretary Sharon Harris. The financial report was given by Treasurer Evelyn Phelps. Tribute to Mary Evelyn Walker In memory of Mary Evelyn Walker, one of our beloved members, time was allowed for silent prayer. This was followed by members sharing "remembrances" of Mary Evelyn. President Margaret Sparks said Mary Evelyn was responsible for her being a member of the Auxiliary. She told how Mary Evelyn invited her to attend one of the Auxiliary meetings with her, and following the meeting, asked her to join. Margaret said she had such a good time and heard all the good things the Auxiliary did, so she joined. Sue Stivers told about taking Mary Evelyn and Louise Brock one Saturday afternoon on a driving tour to see all the quilt pattern designs on rural barns, and how Mary Evelyn knew where everyone in the county lived....no matter what little side road we turned on...even where there were no barn/quilt designs, she could tell you who lived in every house. Evelyn Phelps said Mary Evelyn was the reason that she attended Sunday School Class at Columbia Christian Church ... She kept on encouraging her to attend and how thankful she was for the encouragement. On a lighter side, Evelyn shared the story about she and Mary Evelyn going to the State Women's Democrat Convention. There was no one there for them to dance with so they just got up and danced with each other. This brought a lot of laughs! Shirley Reliford related what a faithful member Mary Evelyn was of the Bliss Homemakers Club for more than 50 years and if she was not able to attend, she had the club to come to her house and have the meeting so she would not be absent. Others talked about how much Mary Evelyn loved her church...Columbia Christian Church, her participation in all the many church activities, her love for Columbia and Adair County, teaching young people, education, Lindsey Wilson College, etc. All of the beautiful memories shared were a tribute to show our love and appreciation to this wonderful person. She will be truly missed by the Auxiliary members. Lila Loy appointed to purchase chair for gift shop Lila Loy was appointed to select and purchase a chair for the gift shop. President Sparks announced that the "Scrub Sale" would be held July 20 and July 28th in the lobby of the Hospital. The public is invited to attend. Special thanks to Margie Coffey A special "Thank You" was given to Margie Coffey for donating plants, flowers, etc. for the gift shop to sell with the funds going to the Auxiliary treasury. It was delightful to have Margie in attendance and for us to have the opportunity to personally express our appreciation to her for her hard work and kindness. The priority lists from the various departments of the hospital were received and decisions will be made at the July meeting what items the Auxiliary will purchase for the hospital. President Sparks appointed the following committees:
The guest speaker was Jelaine Harlow, Health Educator for the Adair County Health Dept. She shared interesting and educational information on the following services available to all citizens in Adair County: Health education, Cooper/Clayton method to stop smoking, 2007-2008 District Health Report Card, and the many services provided by the Lake Cumberland District Health Department. She also introduced a new program "Lifting Women to Better Health" that will be available to women starting July 12. The classes will be held each Monday & Wednesday from 12:00 -1:00 pm for 12 weeks at the Adair County Health Department. Registration is required. For more information call 384-2286 or 5564, ext 221.
