FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Columbia, KY closes at 6pmCT

Taina Betancourt, center manager for the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) at 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY, said that the center will be closing for good at 6pmCT this evening, Friday, June 18, 2010. The office has been aiding victims of the May 2, 2010, floods which devastated Adair County. The office opened on May 26, 2010.

The Columbia office was one of 13 regional DRCs set up around Kentucky. It is the first to close, though offices at Glasgow, Irvine, Greenup, and Elizabethtown will close after Saturday, June 19, 2010.

Betancourt said that during the past week, requests for aid had been reduced to a trickle. "I hope that's because everyone who needed help got it," she said.

The deadline for registering for disaster assistance and for applying for SBA disaster loans is July 12, 2010. Disaster survivors who have't registered for assistance or those with questions are encouraged to call 800-621-3362 or 800-426-7585 or go online to www.disasterassistance.gov. Telephone lines are staffed daily from 7am to 10pmET until further notice.
