By Larry Martin, President KY Blueberry Growers Association

The 8th Annual Blueberry Festival will be held on Friday, June 18 and Saturday, June 19, 2010, on the Town Square in Edmonton, KY.

The Kentucky Blueberry Growers Association (KBGA), and its members have come together once again to host this year's Blueberry Festival. Their mission is to promote growing blueberries in the State of Kentucky. This will be a family oriented event geared for all ages.

Pancake Breakfasts will be held on Friday and Saturday mornings hosted by the KBGA.

Cee Bee Foods will again sponsor the Blueberry Shakes, coloring contest and of course, the Blueberry Pie Eating Contest. The Annual Cook Off will be on Saturday. To make it a little fairer to all who enter the Cook Off, the KBGA decided to let the public be the judges. Tickets may be purchased to taste each of the entries and submit voting ballets for the 3 different categories: jams/jellies/preserves, baked goods and miscellaneous. Applications will be on hand at the KBGA Booth on Friday during the festival or those interested may call Larry Martin at (270) 432-5836 to have it mailed or e-mailed to you.

The only requirement is to use 1 cup of blueberries in the recipe. Your recipe must be turned in with the application upon entering the Cook Off. Each entry participant must be on hand Saturday 2:00pm to distribute samples of their entry to the public during the judging. There is no entry fee this year. Prizes will be awarded in each of the 3 categories.

A big hit each year is the children's bike parade on Saturday. There will be numerous events ongoing throughout the festival including, Craft Booths, Food Concessions, balloons, face painting, children's play area, activities and contests for young and old. The Edmonton United Methodist Church Men's Group will be organizing a Corn Toss Tournament on Saturday at 12:00 noon CT.

A new event added this year will be the 5K Blueberry Fun Run/Walk hosted by GET FIT for Ladies and KBGA. The race will begin at 8:00amCT beginning at the Edmonton Memorial Park and continuing to the Square. For further information contact Vicki Barnes at (270) 432-4348. Wilkerson Transport has agreed to help sponsor this event by providing our racers with transportation back to the park to retrieve their vehicles after the race.

For listening entertainment during the festival we have Scott and the City Limit's Band returning again this year. They are scheduled to play from 6:30pm-9:00pm on Friday, June 19, 2010.

Also on Friday, Chasity Cowan, country singer from Columbia, KY will be performing from 4:30pm-6:30pmCT.

Karaoke will be open to anyone on Saturday evening free of charge beginning at 6:30pm. The Spirituals will also be performing at this year's Blueberry Festival at 10:30amCT on Saturday.

We are seeking additional entertainers wishing to perform during the festival weekend. Please contact Larry Martin, President of the Kentucky Blueberry Growers Association at (270) 432-5836 for additional information.

The Festival Committee also seeks Crafters, Food Vendors, churches, non-profit groups and organizations interested in setting up booths during the festival. This is a great way to promote your business, hobby, health care facility, etc. to our many visitors. Other festival highlights include Train Rides, children's games, Blacksmith Demonstration to name a few.

The Blueberry Festival will also be adding another new event, the Diaper Derby will be held on Saturday at 11:30am on the Square. This is a contest for infants who will crawl on mats to the finish line. Only crawling is allowed.

We will run as many heats necessary to accommodate all those wishing to participate, until we have a final winner.

They will also be selling Cookies and doing free face/painting.

Ongoing Saturday the Girl Scouts will be hosting the Dunk Tank. Head Start will be collecting for their Winter Clothing Drive during the Festival, and the PTO group will be selling snow cones and cotton candy.
