Music stars, music legend at Chamber picnic

The Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce Picnic was entertained by contemporary stars, Bill Bailey, left and Mark Harris, right>. Harris was responding to advice from Legendary musician Robert Flowers, who had just offered advice to calm the duo's pre-performance jitters. No worry, however: The performance was outstanding. Looking on is Betty Smith, there as the grandmother of the real star of the night, Aiden Cox. Flowers, performing arts buffs will remember, was, in his time, the saxophonist with two music groups: The Saint Six, which also included Darlow Rexroat, Tommy Davenport, Danny Forbis, Alvin Zimmerman, and (now Dr.) Ed Rogers; and The Sterlings, which also included Tony Loy, Victor Morrison, and Rollin Pyles' boys, Jerry, Harry and Mark. The Sterling were known almost as well for their tour bus, a converted Columbia funeral home ambulance, as they were for their great music.

There was only one small container of material to go to the landfill at the 2010 Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce Picnic, and next year, the Adair County Garden Club members vow, there won't even be one. The can was necessary because the bags for chips were not biodegradable. From left, above, Wayne Armitage, Wendy Butler Burt, and Barbara Armitage helped direct the disposal of left-over from the hamburgers, soft drinks, and chips into the proper container. Donations taken at the picnic, with over 100 in attendance, went to fund activities of the Adair County Garden Club. Ice Cream line was long, but worth the wait

2010-06-17 - Photo by Ed Waggener. Roadside Park, 2310 Hwy 55 RD South, Columbia, KY
There was a long line at the Mayfield's Ice Cream trailer. Upper center Politely last in line were Sue Stivers, Executive Director of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce and Sheila Hare of Sheila's Country Junction. The treats were provided by the corporate host for the picnic, the Bank of Columbia. Proof that the wait was worth it came in the accolades as crossed back to the picnic pavillon nearer the Highway. And it would not have been safe to have tried to wrest the vanilla cone from the big guy in the lower right corner.

Word is getting out on one of Columbia's best kept secrets

2010-06-17 - Photo by Ed Waggener. Roadside Park, 2310 Hwy 55 South RD, Columbia, KY
It's no longer one of Columbia's best kept secrets: The Roadside Park is booked heavily, especially in the summer time. The Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce handles reservations for large groups at its office at 201 Burkesville ST, Columbia, KY or by calling (270) 384-6020. The park has a long, long tradition in Columbia life, going back to the days when it was known as Conover Woods, to the days when it was operated by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and was known as The State Park, to it's present day operation by the local chamber. The Park re-emerged, better than ever, largely through the determination of Richard and Mary Beth Phelps. Above, left Chamber President Ron Heath, waits as Barbara Armitage acknowledged a few of the activities of the Adair County Garden Club.
